Careful

Careful
How you handle that heart
That bleeding, breaking thing
As strong as it is
It is fragile in your hand
In the hand entrusted to cradle it
Care it
Carry it

Careful!
Hold it basket palmed
Gentle like
Don’t fling it against the wall
To see if it bounces
It shatters easily
And those shards
Like Humpty
Have no crazy glue fix

Careful
With that heart
That sacrifice
That offering
That sacrament
Offered up in honour of you
Careful
You only get so many chances
So many chances and no more
To cherish it
Really cherish it
And no more

Careful
Lest you lose
What dare not be lost
Just because you weren’t careful.
