Trauma Unit

Like a recovering amnesiac
I get vivid flashbacks:

Triggers
Like a shot to the head

I feel:

Like a survivor
In a burn unit
That much more hesitant
To light fires

Matches and sparks
Find me in corners
Traumatized
Like PTSD victims
At the sound of cars backfiring

Afraid to fall again
It’s too hard to stand
Much less walk
Hand in palm
Palm in arm’s crook
Without the sharp pang
Of past pain.

But I know:

Loss becomes permanent
In fear of winning
Holding onto fear
Is the same as sinning
So for my own salvation
May we light a candle
To remember
Muscles grow through pain
Only if you keep pushing
That one more time for gain.
