Some People Stay

With you,
Innumerable miles between
But next to you,
Lingering
Like a sweet perfume.

Or with you,
Pungent
And inescapable
Like that hint of garlic
Haunting you neath your breath.

Some people will leave
But never really go away:
They become a piece
And part of your being–
An element to the you
You’ve become

Many have gone
Easily forgotten
Leaving neither longing
Nor regret

But some people
Leave fingerprints
Unique impressions
Willing themselves into your day,

Whether you wish them depart
Or clutch them close to your heart
Some people must leave
And some people will stay.
